Hello, I'm

Allen Ace Malay

IT Officer  |  Full-Stack Developer  |  Network Administrator

I build the web systems an organization runs on, like billing, queuing, and asset tracking, and keep the networks and servers underneath them working.

About me

I've been the IT officer at ROMELCO since 2019, with over 7 years of hands-on work across web applications, databases, networks, and servers. Most of what I build starts as a real workplace problem: a slow manual process, a missing record, an outage that shouldn't have happened.

I like fixing the whole chain, from the code to the router it runs behind, and I keep this site as a record of what I build and learn.

Open to freelance projects, collaborations, and consulting.

Featured Projects

Selected systems and applications I've built or worked on. Internal systems are described at a high level to protect sensitive information. Open any project for the problem, solution, and result.

IT Asset Management System preview

IT Asset Management System

Web-based management of IT equipment, inventory, assignments, maintenance records, and asset tracking.

Problem, solution, result
Problem
Equipment records were hard to keep consistent and hard to audit.
Solution
A central web database for every asset: assignments, maintenance history, and the documentation forms the office already uses.
Result
One searchable source of truth for who has what and when it was last serviced.

Billing and Payment System preview

Billing & Payment System

Web-based billing, payment, and transaction workflows designed to make account and payment processing easier to manage.

Problem, solution, result
Problem
One account's payments could arrive in several parts, which made it slow to confirm what was fully settled.
Solution
Accounts are grouped by billing month, split payments are summed automatically, and fully paid accounts are marked PAID.
Result
Less manual reconciliation work and a clear view of paid and unpaid accounts.

Queue Management System preview

Queue Management System

Real-time customer queue and service management with browser-based updates and streamlined staff workflows.

Problem, solution, result
Problem
Customers couldn't tell when their turn was coming, and staff had no shared view of the line.
Solution
Window-based queue pages for staff, a live display for customers, and audio alerts, all updated through AJAX.
Result
Staff run their window from a browser, and customers see and hear when they're called.

Web applications and internal tools preview

Web Applications & Internal Tools

Custom web tools and internal systems built around practical business and operational requirements.

Problem, solution, result
Problem
Day-to-day processes depended on manual steps and scattered files.
Solution
Purpose-built tools, including account verification with email OTP and password recovery, member search portals, and reporting pages.
Result
Routine tasks now run from a browser on desktop or mobile.

Digital Signage Display

A full-screen announcement display that updates itself and speaks new messages aloud.

Problem, solution, result
Problem
Announcements had to be repeated by staff to people in a waiting area.
Solution
An HTML display that polls an API in real time and reads announcements out loud with the Web Speech API.
Result
Hands-free announcements that run in any ordinary browser.
HTMLCSSJavaScript

Messenger Bot & Outage Alerts

Consumers check bills and get service announcements from apps they already use.

Problem, solution, result
Problem
Consumers had to call or visit to check a bill or hear about an outage.
Solution
A PHP Messenger bot built on the Meta Graph API handles bill lookups and notification blasts. A cached PHP proxy feeds Facebook announcements and outage alerts into an Android app.
Result
Self-service answers and alerts, without a trip to the office.

Desktop Automation Tools

Small Python apps that turn repetitive data jobs into one-click routines.

Problem, solution, result
Problem
Recurring jobs like database exports, report building, and file uploads were repetitive and easy to get wrong.
Solution
Tkinter apps that convert DBF files into formatted Excel reports, and automate copying, archiving, and FTP upload.
Result
Multi-step routines reduced to a single button click.
PythonTkinterpandas

Dual-ISP Failover (MikroTik)

Automatic internet failover that detects a dead link, not just a down port.

Problem, solution, result
Problem
One ISP outage could take the whole office offline.
Solution
Static default routes with recursive, ping-based gateway monitoring, plus masquerade rules built on interface lists.
Result
Traffic switches to the backup link and returns to the primary on its own.
MikroTikRouterOSFailover

LTO Exam Reviewer

A personal project: a mobile-friendly practice app for the LTO theoretical driving course.

Problem, solution, result
Problem
Reviewing for the exam meant flipping through scattered notes and handouts.
Solution
A single-file web app with a 120-question randomized bank and a countdown timer.
Result
Practice exams on any phone, no install needed.

A practical technology lab for testing hardware, networking, servers, software, and new ideas.

PC build and upgrade work

PC builds & upgrades

Budget builds, GPU and storage upgrades, and testing what actually improves performance.

Networking experiments

Networking experiments

MikroTik routing, multi-ISP failover, and latency testing.

Server experiments

Server experiments

Windows Server roles, backups, and test setups, so changes are tried before they reach production.

Android and mobile technology

Android / mobile tech

App integrations and APK modification, from Kotlin code down to Smali-level fixes.

Trying new tools, frameworks, and workflows before adopting them.

Field Notes

Short lessons from real IT work.

Why failover should ping, not just watch the port

A router only notices a link is down when the interface drops. But an ISP can fail while the cable is still plugged in. Having the router ping a host beyond the gateway lets it detect a dead connection and switch to the backup, not just a missing cable.

Put a cache between your app and third-party APIs

Calling an external API on every page view is slow and can hit rate limits. A small server-side proxy that caches the response for a short time keeps pages fast, keeps access tokens off the client, and can serve the last good copy if the API is down.

On shared hosting, polling beats WebSockets

Real-time screens don't always need persistent connections. A short AJAX polling interval is simpler to host, easier to debug, and fast enough for queue displays and announcement boards.
